the way i like to spend a saturday morning

Our 9-mile hike began with sunny skies and cool air. Many of the roads accessing national forest trails in these parts don’t open until July because there is still a lot of snow in the backcountry. We prefer it that way.

this is my home

99.9% of the trail was under snow… a lot of snow

barely thawed alpine lake

clouds building to the west

thunderheads catching up from the east

frozen pond on the hike out

the one who had the most fun

Wow — these pictures are absolutely breathtaking! I wish we had mountains like these in my part of the US.

(And I think it’s pretty much impossible for your dog to take a bad picture — so adorable!!)

  2. Krissy says:

whew! 9 miles! You certainly earn all the wonderful goodies you make!

Lovely photos and I can’t wait to read your next post. :)

  3. Mrs ErgΓΌl says:

Wow! I will love to have a Saturday morning like yours! Kaweah seems to have grown bigger!

  4. Manggy says:

Oh, wonderful! Now I know why they use such awesome landscapes for cigarette ads– the beauty balances out the vileness of a pack of smokes. :P

  5. Wendy says:

I love hiking on saturdays too. But too bad there’s never snow in HK…Kaweah’s so cute as always!

Gorgeous! I used to consider myself a beach person, but after a few weeklong backpacking trips in the Sierras, I now would rather live near mountains.

    so beautiful!

    Awesome. Gotta love CO!

  11. Fiona says:

I’ll have to show this post to Boris. Mr. B learned yesterday (at the vet) that he’s 115 lbs! That’s about 6 lbs too many, dude. So I tihnk some 9 milers are in his future, though here in KY there will be no snow. I figure he’ll see sleek, fit Kaweah and think, “hmm…maybe I should kick up my exercise regimen?”

Love that shot showing the layers of snow several feet deep. It takes a long time to thaw. We once hiked a bit in Glacier in April – cold and snowy with a bunch of hungry bears roaming around. Very different from the Appalachians, for sure.

  12. Jane M says:

Wow these photos are awesome, but my absolute FAVORITE photo is of your dog! I LOVE DOGS!!!!!!!!!!!! The scenery is fantastic!

Wow, beautiful photos. It’s 100 degrees in the sunny southwest, the only hiking I can do now is early in the morning or in the middle of the night. My German Shepherd would love to lay down in that snow!

Jealousy rears its ugly head…again. I’m glad we have to pass through CO when we want to travel to points west. But this summer it will be the “mountains” of Scotland & England instead.
