Nothing edible to post about today because I was out shooting leaf porn. It’s that time of year around here and it’s lovely. I’m serving up some Colorado gold…

I know that some people refuse to eat leftovers, and I have nothing but pity (okay, some disdain too) for them. I look forward to eating leftovers assuming the first time around was pretty good which is more often than not. I planned out our menu last week so that I’d have plenty of food to last until we left town. Well, we have plenty – or rather, I have plenty.

Jeremy left this morning for two back to back conferences on the east coast. I packed up some lunch for him and dropped him off at the park and ride. I make a point of trying to eat the things that need to be eaten first – things that will spoil versus foods that will keep. Jeremy is refrigerator-stupid for such a brilliant scientist and if left to pack his own lunch will either take the first thing within sight (perhaps a slice of cake even) or something like a frozen tamale while a salad languishes not eight inches away. So it’s usually left to me to finish things off accordingly and I was standing there this afternoon realizing that I have a veritable shitload of red beans and rice, and Chinese stir-fried rice to polish off before I leave on Thursday.

It was overcast and rainy for much of the day yesterday. Didn’t look good for eclipse viewing that evening/next morning. When we went to bed around 11:30 pm it was raining. The total lunar eclipse was to start at 2:51 am. I checked satellite imagery which revealed a lot of clouds, and then I set my alarm for 2:40 am. But I never heard the alarm.

I got up at 2:00, the way you do when you anticipate something like getting up to catch a flight or getting up to see… a lunar eclipse! I padded out to the perch and peered out our picture windows – the moon! The blanket of clouds that pissed on us all night had moved on and instead we had mostly clear skies with a few menacing blobs of cloud here and there. I went back to bed to try and get some more sleep.

But by 2:30 I got my camera gear together and threw on my trusted capilene and fleece and set myself up outside. Jeremy had an exhausting day before, so he asked me to wake him when it was approaching totality. Sure thing.
