Okay, the news that some of you have been waiting for…

Jeremy was recently offered the position of site director for the largest moving radio dish in the world. Not bad for a 35-year old junior faculty in astrophysics. Good on ya, m’ dear! The nature of radio telescopes is that they need to be in radio quiet zones to peer deep into the bowels of the universe. This means that all of the major radio telescope facilities are located in – The Boonies. In this case, we are talking about West Virginia. CU Boulder came back with a retention offer. That means the university said, “We like you, a lot. Please stay. We will offer X, Y, and Z.” Decisions decisions…

Recipe: chinese pork rib soup

Today is a special day. It’s my birthday. But that’s not why the day is special. It’s because two of my good friends share the same birthday with me… and Amy’s twin brother – so make that three!

colorful understory

I received in my email yesterday the best birthday message ever:

Greetings from the future, where it’s already your birthday. The dawning of your birthday in the antipodes was ushered in with the beating of drums, ceremonial dance and breakfast sashimi. Australia has been given a public holiday to mark the occasion, but it is strongly suggested that we either take to the grassy slopes of a nearby park for some mock telemark skiing, or join with other groups at the harbour foreshore for the Grand Crab Boil. At dusk, many Australians will gather with friends, lay down mats facing towards Nederland, Colorado and chant JEN, JEN, JEN…whilst prostrating themselves.

Then we will probably watch some TV.

Recipe: sigara boregi

We saw off our fifth visitor in the past two weeks today. Hey, we planned the visits a while ago – no one figured I’d be having an appendectomy right around the arrival of the first visitor. Well, now that we have the house back to ourselves, we’re relishing it. Actually I’m resting and Jeremy is catching up on work. My healing is slow going and I’m not caring a whole heck of a lot about blogging at the moment as there are other pressing things to worry about. Looks like September will be a slim month on Use Real Butter.

I’ve only picked the camera up again in the last couple of days. Our weather was rainy and cool over the weekend. And that meant I had one thing on the brain: snow in the mountains.
