delayed gratification, in little tiny steps

Sunday, August 20th, 2006

I used up our leftover veggies and cheese for brunch in some omelettes served with hashies and bacon. I didn’t feel hungry again for 9 hours!

this is the equivalent of running 10 miles

I finally wrote up a section that was bugging me forever! I’ll have to go back and massage it, but it was a mental hurdle that I couldn’t get around until today. I think I forgot that I need to set a few “rewards” for myself during the writing stage or else I become burned out, deflated, and totally unmotivated… I mean more than usual. Last night I was so annoyed with my lack of progress, that I determined my reward today would be to review a restaurant if I made headway. But as dinner neared, the thought of reviewing a restaurant got me down. I didn’t want to make more work for myself right now. Instead, Jeremy and I went to try Sushi Tora in Boulder.

further inspiration

Ooh! Kell turned the artichoke dip recipe (hello everyone, I have to tell you that it isn’t MY recipe… I got it from the Etiquette Grrls web site a long time back) into PASTA. What a brilliant girl! She has inspired me to consider making something akin to a savory baklava, but more like spanikopita… I figure we’ll layer the phyllo dough the way you do in baklava (lots of layers) rather than the way you do in spanikopita (one giant filling in the middle). The filling will be coarsely ground artichokes, pine nuts, parmesan cheese, garlic paste and…??? It may very well suck, but I doubt it.

This evening we reviewed Japango, a sushi bar in Boulder. Sushi is great in summer (it’s great anytime, really). There are a lot of sushi bars for the size of Boulder, which says something about the population here – they love sushi. The trick is filtering out which ones are lousy and which ones are great.

get the summer stink on

Monday, May 15th, 2006

Ewww, Kaweah is starting to smell like Summer Dog. We took away her water tonight at 9pm because she’s going in for minor surgery tomorrow to have that funny thing on her lip removed and biopsied. I’ll get her back after work since Jeremy heads south to Socorro for a couple of meetings tomorrow morning. It’s just the girls!

Tonight I prepared some sashimi (hamachi and maguro) for dinner since I know Jeremy loves it and I usually try to treat him to a special meal before he leaves on travel. It still amazes me that I can get Good sashimi-grade fish here in a land-locked state. Let’s here it for bourgeois, liberal, sushi-eatin’ Boulderites.
