sushi tour: akiyama

July 17th, 2008

Here it is at last, the final installation of our Boulder Sushi Tour series! I wish I could say we ended on a high note, but… well – read on.

akiyama of gunbarrel (boulder)

It’s been a good six weeks of sushi touring in the lovely landlocked city of Boulder, Colorado. People are always astonished at the quality of the fish considering the long drive to get to the ocean from here. They’d be even more surprised to learn how much fresh fish is flown in daily. The supply is there because the demand is there. We decided our final sushi restaurant to try would be Akiyama in northeastern Boulder.

dear headcase…

*Rant On*
I originally wrote about my cancer, not to solicit advice or sympathy, but to explain why my blogging would be affected and to just toss out what was on my mind. It wasn’t an invitation for random headcases to swoop down upon me with quack remedies and solutions or to tell me what not to consume or who and how to worship. Just because I was diagnosed with cancer does not mean I welcome these obtuse assaults on my sensibilities. Personally, I don’t allow having good intentions excuse inconsiderate or stupid behavior. I don’t even tolerate that crap from people I know.

So, for anyone with unqualified advice on cancer (particularly if you haven’t HAD it) and how I should be living my life, please stay the hell away from me. When you get cancer, I’ll be sure to send all of the nutcases YOUR way so in addition to the shitty treatments, your various debilitating side effects, and the myriad of infections you contract, you – in your ample spare time and infinite energy – can sift through loads of freakishly useless advice because you know, that’s going to help your cancer heaps.
*Rant Off*

The heat continues to roast the Front Range of Colorado, but life must go on. And by life, I mean social life. And by social life I mean, social life involving food. I met up with friends for lunch today at Treppeda’s in Niwot. This place makes fantastic sandwiches as well as the famed Chicken Parm(esan) that my pals rave about. For me, there is no other than The Chief.

back in town for happy

July 14th, 2008

[Note: This originally posted last night except my server had some personal issues to sort out and things went awry for several hours. Server is feeling better this morning.]

It’s Bastille Day! What better way to celebrate the day than in the company of my favorite French person, Marianne. Actually, Bastille Day slipped our minds and we weren’t reminded of it until we walked into Brasserie 1010 this afternoon for Happy Hour. A live (non-French) band was playing (loudly) and there were red, white, and blue balloons everywhere. A crêpes station was set up outside and all of the waitresses were dressed in highly suggestive French(?) outfits.

Marianne is in between trips to Greenland (for work) and Beth has been in and out of town all summer. This past weekend kicked off our summer travel as well, so we thought it best to get together before everyone scattered off in all directions. The Bra, as I call it, had a special Bastille Day Happy Hour menu with several delicious temptations. We indulged. We were happier for it too.
