fall fruit

While running some errands in town today, I grabbed a few bags of cranberries. You know it’s autumn when the fruits you work with stain your clothing permanently. Everyone loves the fruits of summer, but I associate autumn fruits with baking and keeping the chill of the air at bay. Persimmons, pomegranates, cranberries, pears, apples, grapes, and the coming of citrus. Of course, there is nothing quite like pomegranates.

imagine the ski season if persephone had eaten all of these

The great thing about “getting back into shape” is that your initial workouts are short. They’re short 1) so you don’t hurt yourself and 2) because you can’t last that long anyway. I’ve come over that hump and now my workouts are getting longer. And they will continue to get longer which means they take up a substantial block of time. This is why I like efficient exercise like running, rowing, cycling, because I can do them for 2 hours instead of all day. I used to play volleyball 5 days a week – all day on weekends and about 4 hours each weekday. But I don’t have the time or the people for that anymore. Another time when I found myself in excellent condition was when we backpacked for a month in the Rockies. When you backpack for 12 hours a day, you feel good and strong. I really loved that.
