an apple a day

Saturday, November 11th, 2006

While Jeremy was volunteering at the observatory on campus tonight, I finally did something with the granny smith apples I had accumulated. My intent was to try a classic apple tart tatin recipe, but I didn’t want to deal with the skillet or making the pâte brisée (the crust) this evening. Maybe later when I have more energy and time.

fall fruit

While running some errands in town today, I grabbed a few bags of cranberries. You know it’s autumn when the fruits you work with stain your clothing permanently. Everyone loves the fruits of summer, but I associate autumn fruits with baking and keeping the chill of the air at bay. Persimmons, pomegranates, cranberries, pears, apples, grapes, and the coming of citrus. Of course, there is nothing quite like pomegranates.

love of crabbies

We had brekkie at Chautauqua Dining Hall with Anastasia this morning. She was out visiting with KJ for the weekend. Since her hosts went to church, we three had a good old atheists’ brunch – full of sin, cursing, gossip, and bacon. Devil knows, I loves me some bacon.

This afternoon we realized we had to take care of some errands in Boulder this evening. While in town, we had a wonderful dinner at Jax courtesy of a birthday gift from MIL. Jeremy got the special which was pan-seared scallops on a bed of duck confit risotto with spinach, pistachios, and pomegranate seeds in a pomegranate molasses with beurre blanc.
